An Open Letter to Senators Kerry and Edwards

.

Dear Senators Kerry and Edwards,

I imagine you have heard this before, but I think you should hear it again.  To get the peoples support, you need to bring your message to us—all of us.  I understand you have to concentrate the majority of your time and energy in the swing states, but the rest of us need to know also.  Many are planning on voting for you, not because you have sold them, but because they can’t support the current administration.  Many people get their information from the net, since there is a growing distrust in the concentrated control of the media.  You might as well be the source of the information about you.  I really don’t like getting my information filtered.

You and others such as Dean have raised millions on-line.  Why not take your message on-line with a live forum and/or bulletin board…maybe a moderated Q&A one something like webex.  Just as long as it is a place where everyday folks can ask their questions, let you know their concerns.  Your answers can be there for all to see for themselves without it being filtered and twisted,.

My original thought was, “Have a beer with John,” based on the idea of the old community tavern.  The loss of community taverns is a travesty.  Not for the drinking, but for the interaction people had with their neighbors.  It was the relaxed, open meeting place where our forefathers conceived the ideas behind our great nation.  Call it a "town" style meeting if you like.

Afterwards, I highly recommend you get on the airwaves for interviews…starting with the new and friendly liberal networks that are working so hard to get your message out (help them).  Then follow up with the things people watch:  Leno, Letterman, Oprah, etc.

It will mean putting yourself on the line, but it will give you the chance to clearly express yourself, and give us the answers we really need to truly support you.  You do want as landslide, don’t you?  Then treat us like the concerned, adult citizens we are, while  reminding us that to keep our rights we have to exercise them.

For the record, I am a non-partisan.  I frankly haven’t a lot of faith in any party at this time.  That said, I prefer a more even balance of power between the parties so we don't go too far in either direction.  There is nothing I trust less than  single party control, whether it be Democratic, Republican, Communist, or any other name you want to call it.  I’ve seen the result of single party control in other countries, and am convinced it is not good for democracy.  The same goes for a similar concentration of power in religion or commerce.

We need open and honest communication without all the middle people who think they know what is best for us, so please bring your message directly to us, and the sooner the better.

Sincerely,

Curtis Lester, Anchorage, AK
